LEDWork

Embed has developed a display for the Hanze University Groningen, faculty ‘School of Communication and Media’. The display is equipped with 2500 full color OSRAM SMD LEDs.

The LEDs in the display are controlled 25 times per second. The display contains an Ethernet controller and a few distance sensors. The screen is updated with new content through the Ethernet controller. Because of the distance sensors, interactive content can be used.

Designers can show their own flash animation. Thereby it is possible to use the sensor measuring data in the flash action script.
For Embed it was an interesting challenge to control the LEDs using FPGA. Embed succeeded in this. The FPGA is programmed with VHDL code, to decode a video stream from a DVI output.

The screen is now an artwork in the lobby of the Hanzehogeschool Groningen.
